Stop Making Boring Recruitment Videos
If your recruitment video looks like a hostage tape from 1995, the best talent is already clicking away.
Let us be honest about the state of hiring in 2024. Most corporate recruitment videos are the visual equivalent of a lukewarm cup of office coffee. They start with a sweeping drone shot of a glass building, transition to a montage of people in business casual attire pointing at a computer screen, and finish with a CEO reciting a mission statement that sounds like it was generated by an old algorithm.
If you are a founder or a hiring manager, you might think these videos are safe. In reality, they are a liability. They signal to high-performing talent that your company is a generic, soul-crushing place to spend 40 hours a week. In a market where the best candidates are bombarded with LinkedIn InMails, being safe is the fastest way to be ignored. We have reached a point of transparency peak. Data from Glassdoor shows that 76 percent of job seekers prioritize a company’s actual work culture over its public marketing. They do not want the sanitized version. They want the truth.
The Data Behind Video for Employer Branding
The statistical case for using video in talent acquisition is undeniable, but the execution is where most brands fail. Research from CareerBuilder indicates that job postings with a video icon receive 12 percent more views than those without. Furthermore, LinkedIn reports that video content is shared 20 times more than any other post type. However, these benefits only apply if the viewer stays engaged. If a candidate clicks and sees a staged “Day in the Life” segment, they will bounce within seconds.
Modern candidates, particularly Gen Z and Millennials, have a high functioning cringe filter. They can identify a manufactured culture instantly. To bypass that filter, you must lean into the authentic reality of your business. If your office is a high energy startup hub where people argue over whiteboard strategies in hoodies, show that. If you are a remote-first team that communicates through chaotic Slack channels and dog-filled Zoom calls, show that too. Authenticity is not just a buzzword. It is a competitive advantage in employer branding. When you show the actual environment, you are not just attracting the right people. You are actively filtering out the ones who would not fit, which significantly improves your long term retention rates.
Stop the CEO Monologue and Focus on Peer Trust
One of the most common mistakes in recruitment video production is the CEO Monologue. While a founder might be a visionary, they are often the person a new hire will interact with the least. To build genuine trust, you need to hand the microphone to the peers. The Edelman Trust Barometer has shown for years that people trust a person like themselves or a regular employee significantly more than a high level executive.
Instead of a scripted speech about synergy, film your Lead Engineer talking about the most difficult technical bug they solved last month. Film a junior designer talking about a time they messed up a project and how the team helped them recover. This creates a sense of psychological safety for a candidate before they have even submitted an application. Prospective employees want to see people who look like them and think like them. When a candidate sees a future colleague speaking with unscripted enthusiasm, the psychological barrier to entry drops.
You should also avoid the “one size fits all” approach. A video designed to hire a CFO should feel very different from a video designed to hire a Graduate Sales Rep. When you try to speak to everyone, you end up speaking to no one. We recommend creating micro-content for specific departments. Show the sales team’s high fives and the data team’s quiet deep work zones. This level of personalization shows that you understand the different tribes within your company and respect their unique workflows.
Professional Quality vs. Authentic Direction
There is a common misconception that being authentic requires a low budget. You do not need to film your recruitment efforts on a shaky iPhone to make them feel real. In fact, poor audio and bad lighting can damage your brand by making you look amateur rather than scrappy. The goal of modern recruitment video production is to use professional techniques to capture unscripted moments.
Think of your recruitment video as a vibe check. By the time the two minute mark hits, a candidate should know if they would want to work alongside your team. They should understand the “Why” behind the “What.” People do not join companies just for a paycheck anymore. They join for a mission. If your mission is to disrupt the fintech space or change the way people buy groceries, show the urgency and the passion of the people doing that work.
The war for talent is not won by the company with the biggest production budget. It is won by the company that tells the most compelling, honest story. Stop hiding behind corporate buzzwords and polished montages. Show the coffee spills, the late night breakthroughs, and the genuine laughs. Give people a reason to care, and the right talent will be banging on your door to get in.
